Camouflage Santa Claus

Introduction:

Howdy, my name’s Bo. Bo Riddle. I write songs, make cowboy boots, play the fiddle and sometimes tell stories. I’d like to tell you a little story that happened to me and I wrote a song about it, don’t you see. This is a tale about one of your most favorite people in the whole universe, Santa Claus!

It was Christmas Eve and I was at the Bass Pro Outdoor World doing some last minute Christmas shopping for my little boy and girl when I saw a very large man checking off his Christmas list.

Now, it wasn’t very hard to tell he was trying NOT to attract attention. He was dressed like a big ol’ mossy oak tree. When I say big, I mean BIG. However, for some unknown magical reason, it seemed I was the only one who could see him.

There was just something about him. Maybe it was his grin. That was it! I could tell by the way he was grinning, that he was the king of the Christmas Elves!

Now, I don’t know about you, but I had never seen Santa Claus dressed in camouflage before, and I didn’t know until now, why he was shopping at Bass Pro. But, I’ll tell you more about that a little bit later.

Anyway, he thought he was being inconspicuous, but right away I got suspicious. So I said, “Hey, you’re old St. Nicholas, why are you dressed that way?

He said, “This stuff’s the latest craze! Why everybody’s wearing camouflage these days. And it makes me harder to see when I’m putting Christmas gifts under the tree.” Santa looked right at me. “Bo, you look like someone else I know.”

I gave him a little smile and a wink.

Then he shrugged his jolly shoulders and said, “Oh, well, I’m sure I’ll think of it later, but now I’ve gotta go, or I’ll be late.” Then he headed for his sleigh.

To some, Santa’s clothes may not mean a thing, as long as he leaves a gift. And I know fashions change, but I never thought Santa would resort to this!

So this year he’s gonna be hard to see, sneaking around the Christmas tree. He’s dressed like that camo ATV, out in my garage. He won’t be wearing his bright red suit with his laced up camo Red Head boots. I guess even Santa Claus wears camouflage.

Earlier, I promised I’d let you in on the secret of why Santa Claus was wearing camouflage. Well, it’s a whole story in itself, so here goes.

Now, this tale happened right at the top of the world. Do you know where that is? The North Pole, Santa’s home sweet home!

You see, last year on Christmas Eve, the Anderson twins, Bobbie and her brother Billy, lay fast asleep in their sleeping bags under their Christmas tree. Santa made his way down the chimney, then quietly tiptoed by the sleeping children to put a doll under the tree. To his surprise, he saw Bobbie open her eyes.

Santa jumped behind the couch. He held his breath until he was sure she had gone back to sleep. It was a close call, the closest he’d ever had. He was worried, because in hundreds of years of delivering toys and goodies to make children happy, he had never been caught!

This year, just two days before Christmas Eve, Santa sat on his big chair in The Toy-making Shop. Elves and Elvettes were all around making playthings.

“You look worried, dear,” Mrs. Claus said, touching his cheek.

“I am worried,” he replied. “I still think about almost being seen last year by little Bobbie Anderson. I’m afraid this year I might really get caught, and that would spoil everything.”

“That is a real problem, dear,” said Mrs. Santa. “What are you going to do?”

Everlasting, the supreme doll designer and leader of the Elvettes, sat at Santa’s feet working away. “I have an idea, Your Candy Caneness. Your bright red suit is so easy to see maybe it’s time for a change.” The Elfette jumped to her feet, reached in her backpack, pulled out a doll and handed it to Mrs. Claus.

Santa studied the little doll. “Hey, that looks just like me, only smaller!”

Mrs. Claus held the doll closer him. “And what is that you’re wearing?

Santa smiled. “It looks like a Camouflage Santa Claus suit”

Everlasting said, “That’s right, Your Jolliness, I designed it for this year’s doll collection. But with this suit, if children wake up, you could just stop in front of the Christmas tree and you’ll become…” Everlasting waved her hand like a magic wand. “Invisible!” She shouted with delight.

 “That sounds wonderful,” stated Santa.

“I can make you a suit like this,” said Mrs. Claus, “but I have to start working right away!”

The sounds of clipping, snipping, oohs and ahhs could be heard from behind The Sewing Shop door.  Waiting was almost more than Santa could bear. He wanted to see his new suit. “Is it ready yet? Is it ready yet?” he asked. “Christmas Eve is coming and I must be prepared!” he exclaimed with excitement.

“Not yet.” Everlasting said, blocking the doorway she had guarded for the past two days. “They’re still working on it and I’m not supposed to let anybody in. Not even you, Your Givingness!”

Finally, after waiting and waiting outside the door, Santa and the Elves fell asleep. They all snored so loudly, Everlasting put on her earmuffs!

On the morning of Christmas Eve, it finally became quiet inside The Sewing Shop. The door slowly creaked open, and out came Mrs. Claus with the Elvettes following behind. They rolled out a clothes rack covered with a piece of beautiful gold fabric.

Santa and the Elves yawned and rubbed open their eyes, while Mrs. Claus began her speech.

“Santa, today we’d like to help you with your job of delivering gifts to children without being seen. We want to makes your Christmas a little brighter and your heart a little lighter, so we’ve created a new-fangled suit for this year’s…Camouflage Santa Claus!” she announced, as she pulled away the gold covering.

When Santa saw the suit, his eyes got widened and his smile grew as bright as sunshine. “I’d like to try it on, right this minute!”

When he returned, dressed in his new Camouflage Santa Claus suit, he stepped in front of the Christmas tree, and right there before their very eyes, Santa disappeared!

“Where did he go?” One Elf asked.

“He was here in front of the tree a second ago!” shouted an Elfette.

Santa was delighted that he could stop in front of a Christmas tree and disappear…like magic! Suddenly, Santa’s laughter rolled as loud as thunder throughout the North Pole. “HO, HO, HO! It’s the best new suit I’ve ever seen. You have given me the perfect gift, and this will be the most Merry Christmas ever!”

Soon, the moon began to rise, the sleigh was loaded and it was time for Santa’s exciting trip to begin! He was overjoyed to have such a wonderful job. No one but him, in the entire universe, delivered goodies once a year to little boys and girls all over the whole wide world.

The total of all the population of the North Pole stood in the moonlight and watched Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen pull Santa and his sleigh over the clouds. The jolly man’s voice rang out loud and clear, “HO, HO, HO. I’ll be back by morning, you know.”

Everlasting held Mrs. Claus’ hand. “I sure hope that suit works like it’s supposed to,” she said, as she watched him go.

Mrs. Claus lovingly squeezed the Elfette’s tiny fingers. “I do, too, Everlasting, I do, too.”

The suit worked perfectly and Santa was having the time of his life. He had already been saved from getting caught at least five times!  He knew he looked like a tree himself, and hoped he resembled a great big jolly Christmas tree!

Because he could hide so well, Santa was able to move through the children’s houses more quickly, and quiet as a mouse, even though he was big as a hippopotamus! What a magical suit! He thought, maybe, just maybe, I could add some lights to me, and look exactly like a Christmas tree.’

No, no, that would be too much, and the Elves would make fun of me if they even knew I thought of such.

Out of the blue, his cell phone, which was linked directly to the North Pole, rang in the night. A familiar voice was on the other end.

“Santa, hi, Santa, hi, are you flying in the sky?”

It was Fiddlestick, his riddle making head Elf. “Of course I am. This suit is wonderful, deliveries went faster than ever. I’m done and I’ll be home soon.”

“Get a grip, let it rip, tonight you make a special trip.”

“Oh? What kind of special trip, Fiddlestick?”
